Understanding the health of your soil is the foundation of successful and productive farming, yet soil testing can be slow, expensive and inaccessible for many farmers. Developed by a team of chemists and data scientists at the University of Lincoln, Agristat is an innovative and user-friendly way to measure and monitor key nutrients in your soil, delivering accurate and easy-to-interpret results within minutes – and with no need for complicated setup or calibration.

A field of crops

Agristat is a hand-held device for measuring plant nutrients and can be used in the field or back in the farm office. It aims to encourage better decision making and more environmental monitoring by making soil testing more accessible and accurate, without the need to send samples back to the lab. Testing your soil is simple: take your soil sample and add it to the beaker, before adding liquid to a 1:10 soil to liquid ratio. Put the lid on the beaker so that the sensors are in the liquid mix and press the button to start the mixing and data collection process.

1

Select your soil sample

2

Add your sample and de-ionised water to the beaker, in a 1:10 ratio

3

Mix for 5 minutes while the data is collected

4

Repeat for additional soil samples

5

View the nitrate, potassium and ammonium data for your selected sample(s)

Frequently asked questions

What nutrients does Agristat currently measure?

Agristat currently measures the levels of nitrate, potassium and ammonia in soil.

How much soil do I need to collect?

You only need a small sample of soil. You will be mixing it in a ratio of 1:10 with deionised water.

How do I get the results?

The results are delivered to your device as easy to interpret dashboards and heatmaps.

How does Agristat work if I need to take multiple soil samples?

We would recommend collecting the individual soil samples and taking them back to the farm office for testing. Simply wash out the beaker between each test.

Does Agristat work for all soil types?

Agristat has been proven to work accurately across a broad range of soil types, including heavy clay, sandy loam, silt, peat, calcareous and sandy clay loam

Is Agristat available to purchase?

Agristat is still in development but we are actively seeking partners to engage in pilots. Please contact us to explore opportunities.
